My name is Isabella Acosta. I worked as a Language Assistant at St. Agustin’s School during the school year of 2019/2020.  I must begin by saying that I am so thankful for all the incredibly friendly staff and teachers at this school, along with the students and parents who truly went out of their way to make me feel welcome.

Regarding my experience at this school, I was thrilled to be placed with elementary students, and I was excited to be helping them along this journey full of new adventures and deep understanding of concepts.  I taught alongside different teachers: Teacher Javier, Teacher Ana Gomez, Teacher Carmen, and Teacher Ana. This was one of the perks of the job since it allowed me to see different teaching styles and grade levels, which also served as a learning opportunity for me.

My days consisted of teaching core subjects such as Natural Science and Social Science through English. Teaching through Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is one of my favourite ways to teach because it allows students to be taught in English and they will not only learn about science, but they will also gain relevant vocabulary and language skills. English class was taught through role-plays and stories, which increased my students’ motivation to learn what was being taught to them.

St. Agustin School is incredibly driven to get the kids to grasp the English language and more so develop a love for it. This can be evidenced in the school itself, where everything is labelled in both Spanish and English. Also, many activities outside of the classroom took place in English, such as the weekly Reading Corner, the Solidarity Sandwich event, The Second-Hand Market, The Garden Project, among many other activities.

I loved teaching at this school, but what I enjoyed most of all was being able to learn from the talented teachers who I worked with.

Hello, my name is Shirley and I was the language assistant at San Agustin, school. First of all, let me start by saying the connections between the colleagues were all based on respect and equality. Since day one I felt very welcomed by everyone around and it made me feel confident. My coordinator Ana made sure that I had access to all the resources needed in order for me to succeed. It was my first time working with adolescents and it was definitely quite the journey because I was able to learn so much from them every day. The students also played an important role in my teaching experience because they all have a special talent that literally challenged me. But those challenges allowed me to expose myself to new things and become a better language assistant. San Augustin has created an amazing community for everyone that gets the opportunity to go in and they continue to strive even during these hard times. I feel very blessed to have met my colleagues and students because they are absolutely extraordinary in every way. One thing to keep in mind is that nothing comes easy but with hard work, determination, and a good team to fall on can make any experience special. My overall experience was fantastic and I wouldn’t change it for the world. Thank you, San Agustin teachers and students, for allowing me to take part of your journey.
